Built in the 22 years between 1963 and 1986, the Raul Leoni Hydroelectric Power Station, informally called the Guri Dam, is the 2nd largest hydro facility in the world. Guri has two machine rooms, each with ten generators which provide in aggregate 10,000 megawatts of generating capacity. To produce the same energy from oil would require 300,000 barrels per day. Guri is located on the Caroni River one hundred kilometers from its confluence with the Orinoco River at Ciudad Guayana.
